My father had walked Willa every morning since 2011. I assumed this responsibility when he came down with a debilitating and long-lasting bout of pneumonia in January 2014. Although he has fully recovered, I continue the morning amble. These seemingly ordinary color photographs comprise a series of equally ordinary performances: during the months of February and March 2014, I walked Willa and photographed bushes and plants in the neighborhood along the way. Not only do the square and static images belong to the tradition of still life, but also they establish a distinctive, figural presence that implies candid portraiture.
